It’s more than friendship.

AP reported that yesterday in WELLINGTON, New Zealand –A plucky foot-high Jack Russell terrier named George saved five New Zealand children from two marauding pitbulls, but was so severely mauled in the fight he had to be destroyed, his owner said.

“George was brave — he took them on and he’s not even a foot high,” Gay told The Associated Press. “He jumped in on them, he tried to keep them off.”
“George tried to protect us by barking and rushing at them, but they started to bite him — one on the head and the other on the back,” Rosewarne said. “We ran off crying and some people saw what was happening and rescued George.”
“If it wasn’t for George, those kids would have copped it.”

It is very sad that this kind of thing happens. It takes just a little bit of responsibility to raise pit bulls so they are not violent. It is a shame for the little dog and well as the pits… the only ray of sunshine is that the children were not hurt. (…although, pit bulls are not naturally aggressive to humans (but are more likely to be aggressive to other dogs), and the article suggests that these pits were killers…) I don’t know for sure, but it is just one more shining example of when pits are assumed to be killers before they are assumed to be pets. There really needs to be more education about the training and care of pits, so this kind of thing doesn’t happen.
